Weekly Update 11/04/12

After a welcomed long weekend its back to work for the solar team. The pressure is slowly building as time starts to run out for the optimisation of Ilanga I. We have met with some of the undergraduates to discuss their projects and point them in the right direction, while the senior team balances their time between working on the two vehicles. Last week we introduced the undergraduates to a little bit of composite processing through the manufacturing of two halves of our front wheel fairings from fiberglass. It was a nice change having too many hands working for once as opposed to just myself, Pieter and Kennith doing most of the fiberglass for the vehicle. Within the next few weeks the undergraduates will need to start finalising their designs if they want us to use them so the pressure is on, but no body ever said this would be easy!!!

About Warren Hurter

I am a Qualified Mechanical Engineer continuing my studies to a masters level. I have been appointed Project Manager for the UJ Solar team, and will also be designing a survival cell (FIA specs) as well as the suspension steering and braking system for Ilanga II. On Ilanga I my role in 2011 was project manager, chassis designer, power train designer and solar cell encapsulation. My goal for 2012 is to put the University of Johannesburg on the map by producing a second competitive solar vehicle to represent the university at the South African Solar Challenge.
