Weekly Update 09/05/12

Ok so this post isn’t quite weekly, but a lot has been happening on our side that’s been keeping us fairly busy. The biggest update is the modifications we are making to Ilanga I (now known as Ilanga I,I). I don’t want to give away too much detail but we are trying to drop the weight as much as possible. We had a successful test drive at Tarlton Raceway on Monday. This test gave us a good idea on a few changes we can make, and gave us some time behind the wheel putting the car (Ilanga I) through its paces. The undergraduates have been progressing slowly (some too slowly), but Pieter and Stephanus are on their cases and they have been given a final design deadline for Friday.

For all our followers out there, go buy yourself the latest edition of Popular Mechanics as soon as you can:) Popular Mechanics has kindly published a four page article on the UJ Solar project, and a little bit about some of the other vehicle projects on the go here.

About Warren Hurter

I am a Qualified Mechanical Engineer continuing my studies to a masters level. I have been appointed Project Manager for the UJ Solar team, and will also be designing a survival cell (FIA specs) as well as the suspension steering and braking system for Ilanga II. On Ilanga I my role in 2011 was project manager, chassis designer, power train designer and solar cell encapsulation. My goal for 2012 is to put the University of Johannesburg on the map by producing a second competitive solar vehicle to represent the university at the South African Solar Challenge.
