Weekly (aka Monthly) Update 04/07/12

Yes the last update was more than a month ago, sorry about that. But since then we have begun welding of the optimised chassis and suspension, encapsulation has begun and the electrical engineers are like little children with all there new toys (some of which are microcopic so us mechanicals really don’t understand what the fuss is about?).  So we are planning to have Ilanga I-I rolling on wooden motors by the first week of August, so yes we have a month to pull off a terrifying amount of work… Oh and yes I did say wooden motors. Our hub motors will only be arriving towards the end of September, meaning we have about a week to test them.

On the undergraduate front we have four of the twelve still around working. They are working on the current vehicle, making it nice and pretty so we have a backup for the race and so we have a good looking marketing tool (and hopefully they learning a thing or two).

So we are in for one hell of a month to get our vehicle rolling.

About Warren Hurter

I am a Qualified Mechanical Engineer continuing my studies to a masters level. I have been appointed Project Manager for the UJ Solar team, and will also be designing a survival cell (FIA specs) as well as the suspension steering and braking system for Ilanga II. On Ilanga I my role in 2011 was project manager, chassis designer, power train designer and solar cell encapsulation. My goal for 2012 is to put the University of Johannesburg on the map by producing a second competitive solar vehicle to represent the university at the South African Solar Challenge.
